8/31/12- Frank Zappa & Phish- Peaches En Regalia

It's Friday and I can only find one appropriate way to celebrate and that is with this amazing tune. Zappa's Peaches en Regalia continues to be one of my all time favorite tunes- so complexly orchestrated, beautifully executed, amazing instrumentation, quirky, and loaded with personality. This man was a musical genius.

8/28/12- Galactic - Going Down Slowly & Hey Na Na

T.O.T.D Tuesday DoubleDay Vol. 7. Getting groovy on this Tuesday. Feels good to dip my toes back in to soothing waters of Jam...its been a long time! This first tune (very nice live session) has a lot in common with some Little Feet tunes. The second tune is off of their new album Carnivale Electricos. Dig it and dig it hard.

8/27/12- Cypress Hill- Insane In The Brain

I'm always up for a Cypress Hill cut- I love their use of of funk and jazz samples. Their first two albums sound is immediately recognizable.

8/24/12- Raymond Scott- On To Something (mini documentary) & In The Hall of the Mountain Queen

With Dan Deacon's new album America dropping I thought I would post a TOTD for the man who was one of the grandfathers of the electronic music the we know and love today- Raymond Scott. Check out the mini documentary about him:

8/23/12- Otis Rush- I Can't Quit You Baby

Gettin back to some blues action from the second best Otis around. Great tune for a lazy late summer day.

8/22/12- Steely Dan- Aja

My internet connection is horrible...so quick and short, this is a classic album by some of the best two musicians ever.

8/21/12- Tame Impala- Elephant & Expectation

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 6. First off, these Australian dudes currently have one of my favorite band names. More importantly they have a really fantastic fusion of sound in their tunes. Mixing some great elements of the Beatles song instrumentation and song structure, T. Rex recording techniques, Pink Floyd psychedelic jamming, etc. If you liked what came out of the late 60's early 70's, you will most likely enjoy Tame Impala.

8/20/12- Ozma- Turtleneck Coverup

Back from the break with a band that has very obvious ties to the Weezer sound. Super solid music to begin the transition from summer to fall (my favorite time of the year that never lasts long enough!)

8/8/12- College feat. Electric Youth- Real Hero

I just watched Drive (2011) yesterday and was really impressed by the cinematography and sound track, which really elevate it beyond a typical heist gone wrong movie. I really suggest checking this one out and watching it a few times for subtleties and nuances.

8/7/12- Grandpa Jones- How Many Biscuits Can You Eat & Good Old Mountain Dew

 TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 5. Gotta love Grandpa Jones strummin' the banjo away on that good old time country music. Performers don't get much better than him.

8/3/12- Counting Crows- Mr. Jones

A sad day for me. My cat, Mr. Jones, passed away after a very long and happy life- close to 19 years old. He came in to my life in 93 and was immediately a best friend. Any animal lover knows that these pets become much more than just pets. Mr. Jones, there are few words that express how much you meant to me and how much you will be missed. In honor of you, here is the track that was your namesake. Enjoy whatever the afterlife holds for you.

8/2/12- Country Gentlemen- Fox On The Run

A switch of gears here. I can't get too far into August without dusting off some good ole' time bluegrass. Don't think for a second that a bands like Mumford and Sons, Lumineers, Avett Brothers, etc. would be around today if groups like this didn't push bluegrass past its inception into a prominent space in the music pantheon. Keep on enjoying the weather with some of the nicest vocal harmonies around.
