12/19/12- Houses- Soak It Up

12/18/12- Bix Beiderbeck- Singing The Blues

Some classic jazz for a morning off of work- Bix might have the blues, but I sure don't! p.s. love the sound of the cymbals here and there.

12/7/12- Snake Oil- Can of Love and The Captain

A pretty sweet pysch-rock tune by a group from the northeast (NY,CT,MA)
check out more here

12/6/12- Trey Anastasio- Scabbard & Pigtail

Former Phish frontman Trey Anastasio's new album, Traveler, is really worth a listen. The songs range from intricately composed, to smooth and groove oriented, and even into new territory for Trey- song oriented indie rock (including a cover of Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood"). It certainly has a little bit of everything for everyone. This is not to say that every song is great, but his ambition is admirable. The best part about the album is the variety of instrumentation and depth of sonic production. I have given the album a few listens now and I am continually impressed by the new sounds/ textures/ and recording styles that I hear. Even if you don't dig in to the Jam Band scene, try to give this one a chance.

12/4/12- Mojave 3- Bluebird of Happiness

I watched the film Paper Man the other night knowing nothing about it other than the fact it stars a favorite actor of mine, Jeff Daniels, and that the cover of it had Ryan Reynolds dressed up in a superhero costume. Check out a synopsis:
In the tradition of Lost In Translation and The Squid and the Whale, Paper Man is a wonderfully funny story about people trying desperately to find the same joy in real life as they do in their imagination. Golden Globe and Tony nominee Jeff Daniels stars as Richard Dunn, a novelist with writer's block isolated in Long Island by his sensible, surgeon wife (Emmy winner Lisa Kudrow) in order to get cracking on the new book that will revive his career. But Richard isn’t totally alone: along for the ride is a precocious local teen (Emma Stone in a breakout performance) with issues of her own whose refreshing candor lifts him out of his stupor. And of course, Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds), Richard's closest confidante since childhood is never far, always encouraging him to grow up even if that means leaving him behind. Funny, moving and true, Paper Man is a genuinely offbeat gem.
Comparing it to the two other films listed is pretty spot on, but this one went a bit further for me. I definitely encourage anyone who likes these types of stories to check this one out. Today's TOTD (no doubleday today) is a pretty moving song that comes in towards to introspective sad/happy ending, a tear jerker to say the least.

12/1/12- Keller Williams- I am Elvis & Broken Convertible

Won some free tickets to go see this guy tonight. I am excited to re-enter the jam world that I have been away from for too long. Pumped to say the least. Go see live music!

Thursday, November 29, 2012

11/29/12- P.S. Eliot- Sore Subject & Waxahatchee- Be Good

A very nice female led pop group that just called it quits. too bad...but from it spawned a solo project --Waxahatchee that is definitely worth checking out.

11/28/12- Alice In Chains- Nutshell

Two things:
1. With winter fast approaching, here is yet another fantastic tune to slow down to.
2. This is a fantastic example of what MTV used to be in its hay day.

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

11/27/12- Sufjan Stevens- Pleasure Principle & For The Widows In Paradise, For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti

11/20/12- Tex Beneke & The Glenn Miller Orchestra- I'm In The Mood

Well, from yesterday's rocking power trio of Kadavar back to the days when they had whole orchestras to play the popular music of the day. It's always good to get some big band music in your life- and what better song- Im in the mood for Thanksgiving time!

Monday, November 19, 2012

11/19/12- Kadavar- Black Sun

In preparation for my trip to Denver for Thanksgiving I figure I should get some joint papers ready and dig in to some stoner rock because hey, weed is legal there now and I'm gonna need an appetite for all that food.
In all seriousness though, its great to hear a power trio rip in to some riffs.

11/16/12- Sponge- Molly (Sixteen Candles)

Some songs have either a lyric or melody that get buried in to your brain only to resurface at some random point in the future. This is one of those songs. Although Sponge only had two radio hits- this tune and one called Plowed- both of which can be filed in the post grunge mid 90's sound- (others include the Gin Blossoms, Collective Soul, and Fuel (to name only a few). These bands and tunes had their day, but for the most part are now long forgotten- Until that day where that word, phrase or melody crawls out of the inner most folds of your brain. Last night something came up in a conversation with Jess where the words "don't ask why" where spoken. Just like that, "POW!" this song found its way back in to my consciousness. Find those songs in your life- they are long lost friends that deserve your renewed attention.

11/13/12- Mariah Carey- Fantasy, Tom Tom Club- Genius of Love

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 13- Really big fan of this Mariah Carey track- great vocals, but what makes it is the sample of the Tom Tom Club's tune Genius of Love. Check both here:

Monday, October 29, 2012

10/29/12- Hum- Stars

Those of us that grew up in the 90's- remember this tune? Pretty much a forgotten group, but beautiful mix of Weezer-ish vocals and Pumpkins-ish instrumentation.

Friday, October 26, 2012

10/26/12- Queen- Misfire

A tasty little Queen tune that gets passed by because of their large number of major hits, but definitely worth digging in to.

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

10/24/12- Led Zeppelin- Down By The Seaside

Some relaxing stuff by a rather hard hitting band. Digging in to some country sounds, very nice,

If you ever wanted to see what a cat band looks like then look no further then this video.

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

10/3/12- They Might Be Gaints- Birdhouse In Your Soul

I never thought much of this band, but was driving to work yesterday and heard this song on a Serious channel and it immediately stuck with me. Great feel and quirky quality. The singer has a Violent Femmes kinda voice and the keyboards make me think of some Devo tunes. Give it a listen.

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

10/2/12- Ben Folds Five- Do It Anyway & Fraggle Rock Theme

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 10. Great new tune from Ben Folds Five off 'The Sound of the Life of the Mind'- first album in 13 years. Good to have 'em back. Love the music video featuring the crew from Fraggle Rock! Be sure to check out this great show's theme tune. Brings back memories!

Monday, October 1, 2012

10/1/12- Porno For Pyros- Pets

My friend says we're like the dinosaurs only we're doing ourselves in much faster than they ever did.
Great tune. Amazing band name.

Friday, September 28, 2012

9/29/12- Stan Bush- You've Got The Touch

I have spent 27 years on this planet and have now crossed in to my 28th year, all of which I am grateful for. I take is as a sign of great things to come for Transformers the animated movie to be on right at midnight. This movie is a major touch stone in my life for many reasons, but I hope and believe it means major transformation in my life. I have put certain plans in to play to ignite the transformation, but where it takes me is the real exciting part. Please enjoy this thematic tune from the movie that only amplifies my resolve to have a great year.

9/28/12- The Cars- Shake It Up

"Dance all night, play all day, don't let nothin' get in the way" is my new mantra.

Thursday, September 27, 2012

9/27/12- Micachu & The Shapes- Holiday- 2 ways

There are times when a live/acoustic recording of a tune is really different then its studio recording. That is the case with 'Holiday' by Micachu. Give both recordings a listen and you will know exactly what I mean. What one do you like better? For my dollar I will go with the live recording- it allows the really nice chord structure and vocal harmonies to stand out. Love the tune either way though.

Wednesday, September 26, 2012

9/26/12- Anamanaguchi- Airbrushed

How about some 8-bit video game rock? drag out your old video game councils and relive your childhood.

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

9/25/12- Joe Cocker- You Are So Beautiful & She Came In Through The Bathroom Window

Friday, September 21, 2012

9/21/12- Hank Williams- Hey Good Lookin' & Move it on Over

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

9/18/12- Dinosaur Jr. - Watch the Corners & I Feel the Pain

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 9. The first single from the new album 'I Bet On Sky' from the band that never seems to quit. Sounds like its gonna be stellar. Also an oldie, but goodie performed live.

Monday, September 17, 2012

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

9/12/12- Zwan- Lyric

A once great "Super Group" Zwan featured members of Smashing Pumpkins (Corgan and Chamberlin), Tortoise, Slint, Chavez, and A Perfect Circle. In my opinion this is some of the strongest music to come from Corgan for sometime. Much brighter than his Pumpkins work.

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

9/11/12- Circulatory System- Symbols and Maps

This album was on the top of Pitchfork's best albums of 2001. On today's remembrance of the 911 tragedies it's important to take a moment and look/think back.

Monday, September 10, 2012

9/10/12- 311- Gap

In Omaha for the week doing some work. Can't be in the area without celebrating these boys. Always digging this summer-time b-side off of the 'Blue' album.

This special Saturday TOTD goes out to my Wheaton fellas. Hope everyone is doin well.

Thursday, September 6, 2012

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

9/5/12- Astro - Ciervos & Coco

Diggin' this Chilean band. Give their first LP a full stream at NPR music.

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

9/4/12- Alt-J -Breezeblocks (studio & live) & Fitzpleasure

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 8. Can you understand what the singer is saying, because I sure can't. Still a sweet find of a fairly unknown band from across the pond.

Friday, August 31, 2012

8/31/12- Frank Zappa & Phish- Peaches En Regalia

It's Friday and I can only find one appropriate way to celebrate and that is with this amazing tune. Zappa's Peaches en Regalia continues to be one of my all time favorite tunes- so complexly orchestrated, beautifully executed, amazing instrumentation, quirky, and loaded with personality. This man was a musical genius.
Be sure to check also check out Phish paying tribute below.

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

8/28/12- Galactic - Going Down Slowly & Hey Na Na

T.O.T.D Tuesday DoubleDay Vol. 7. Getting groovy on this Tuesday. Feels good to dip my toes back in to soothing waters of Jam...its been a long time! This first tune (very nice live session) has a lot in common with some Little Feet tunes. The second tune is off of their new album Carnivale Electricos. Dig it and dig it hard.

Monday, August 27, 2012

8/27/12- Cypress Hill- Insane In The Brain

I'm always up for a Cypress Hill cut- I love their use of of funk and jazz samples. Their first two albums sound is immediately recognizable.

Friday, August 24, 2012

8/24/12- Raymond Scott- On To Something (mini documentary) & In The Hall of the Mountain Queen

With Dan Deacon's new album America dropping I thought I would post a TOTD for the man who was one of the grandfathers of the electronic music the we know and love today- Raymond Scott. Check out the mini documentary about him:

Thursday, August 23, 2012

8/23/12- Otis Rush- I Can't Quit You Baby

Gettin back to some blues action from the second best Otis around. Great tune for a lazy late summer day.

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

8/22/12- Steely Dan- Aja

My internet connection is horrible...so quick and short, this is a classic album by some of the best two musicians ever.

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

8/21/12- Tame Impala- Elephant & Expectation

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 6. First off, these Australian dudes currently have one of my favorite band names. More importantly they have a really fantastic fusion of sound in their tunes. Mixing some great elements of the Beatles song instrumentation and song structure, T. Rex recording techniques, Pink Floyd psychedelic jamming, etc. If you liked what came out of the late 60's early 70's, you will most likely enjoy Tame Impala.

Monday, August 20, 2012

8/20/12- Ozma- Turtleneck Coverup

Back from the break with a band that has very obvious ties to the Weezer sound. Super solid music to begin the transition from summer to fall (my favorite time of the year that never lasts long enough!)

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

8/8/12- College feat. Electric Youth- Real Hero

I just watched Drive (2011) yesterday and was really impressed by the cinematography and sound track, which really elevate it beyond a typical heist gone wrong movie. I really suggest checking this one out and watching it a few times for subtleties and nuances.

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

8/7/12- Grandpa Jones- How Many Biscuits Can You Eat & Good Old Mountain Dew

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 5. Gotta love Grandpa Jones strummin' the banjo away on that good old time country music. Performers don't get much better than him.

Friday, August 3, 2012

8/3/12- Counting Crows- Mr. Jones

A sad day for me. My cat, Mr. Jones, passed away after a very long and happy life- close to 19 years old. He came in to my life in 93 and was immediately a best friend. Any animal lover knows that these pets become much more than just pets. Mr. Jones, there are few words that express how much you meant to me and how much you will be missed. In honor of you, here is the track that was your namesake. Enjoy whatever the afterlife holds for you.
"When everybody loves you...that's just about as funky as you can be"

Thursday, August 2, 2012

8/2/12- Country Gentlemen- Fox On The Run

A switch of gears here. I can't get too far into August without dusting off some good ole' time bluegrass. Don't think for a second that a bands like Mumford and Sons, Lumineers, Avett Brothers, etc. would be around today if groups like this didn't push bluegrass past its inception into a prominent space in the music pantheon. Keep on enjoying the weather with some of the nicest vocal harmonies around.

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

7/31/12- Zechs Marquise- Mega Slap & Getting Paid

TOTD Tuesday Doubleday Vol. 4. I saw Fang Island last night and this El Paso based group was the opening act. I had never heard of them before but I was impressed beyond belief- these guys in a way stole the show. Fang Island definitely killed their set and I was floored that they sound just as good live as recorded, but this group came with an intense energy and enthusiasm. Four guys were all huddled up on stage- surrounding their bombastic and intensely talented drummer who seemed to be the nucleus of the group. (you can get a sense of this in the video below) They are purely an instrumental group but their songs, which get up in to the 5-7minute mark, all have many twists, turns, and various sections/melodies- enough to keep you engaged the whole time. Their sound seems to be equal parts prog, funk, hip hop, jazz, and a hint of metal which is extremely infecting. Get lost and enjoy!

Monday, July 30, 2012

7/30/12- The King Khan & BBQ Show- I'll Be Loving You

Sometimes you just need to follow a chain of "related artists" searches till you find something new. That is exactly what I did to find this gem, thanks Spotify. After a quick Wikipedia search I learned that they were a Canadian garage rock duo from Montreal that blended doo-wop and punk. They have since broken up, but this song is totally awesome.

Thursday, July 26, 2012

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

7/25/12- Rammstein- Du Hast

Need something to get through the week? I do. Rammstein- no more, no less.
note: PLAY THIS LOUD. Commence head banging.

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

7/24/12- Alanis Morissette- Ironic & Hand In My Pocket

TOTD: Tuesday DoubleDay Vol. 3- Alanis Morissett's 1995 album Jagged Little Pill is chalk full of amazing tunes, many of which are probably etched into anyones brain who grew up during the 90's. From open to close the listener is hit by an outstanding range of pop rock, catchy hooks, and amazing production. It has so many great songs that it was really hard to choose just two. In the end I decided to go with some of the more well known tracks, partly because they both have great music videos- a must to break into the once great MTV scene. If you haven't listened to this album in a while then I highly encourage you to give it a spin.

Monday, July 23, 2012

7/23/12- Passion Pit- Carried Away

I have always been kinda hard on these guys for playing to much into the electronic/rock- 80's vibe phase that is really prominent in current popular groups. I still have these opinions and am skeptical about their new album, but this song is just too damn catchy to not like. A pretty great summer tune. Enjoy.

Sunday, July 22, 2012

7/22/12- Barry Mann- Who Put The Bomp

Some tunes for a sunny Sunday. Even if Barry couldnt think of enough actual lyrics for this tune, it is still a classic.

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

7/18/12- Old Crow Medicine Show- Bootlegger's Boy

Its good to see these guys out with some new tunes..their last album, Tennessee Pusher, came out back in 2008- which is a very long time in the music world. Their new album, Carry Me Back, sounds promising, but unfortunately does not include guitarist/vocalist Willie Watson- one of the more prominent members of the group. In any case, enjoy this solid old-timey tune (all the better with the group busking!)

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

7/17/12- Delicate Steve- Don't Get Stuck & Africa Talks To You

TOTD- Tuesday DoubleDay Vol. 2. Just heard of this guy through NPR Music's All Songs Considered (which is a fantastic program). His album Positve Force is full of some of the strongest instrumental music that I have heard in a long time. If you are fan of the guitar- especially slide guitar, this is a must listen.

Saturday, July 14, 2012

7/14/12- Smokey Robinson and The Miracles- Tears of a Clown

Some weekend tunes coming at you! Such sad lyrics for such an upbeat tune. Enjoy the contrasts of life!

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

7/11/12- No Doubt- Sunday Morning

Some nice alternative/skaa rock for today. No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom was a pretty big record for me back in the 90's- them along with Reel Big Fish, Gold Finger, Rancid, and Less than Jake are major musical touchstones. I could have gone with the better known singles off this album, but I really dig this deeper cut...plus Gwen is looking pretty damn good in the video.

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

7/10/12- Kid Rock- I Am The Bullgod/ Bawitdaba

New TOTD Feature.....**TUESDAY DOUBLE-DAY**  Vol. 1 Kid Rock was definitely doing something right back in 98. These two tracks are still killer today ...and I still don't care what bawitdaba means.

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

7/3/12- Grand Funk Railroad- The Loco-motion

With the 4th of July tomorrow here's some music to get moving to. This heat streak seems to have no end in sight, so strip down to your skivvies, dance the day away, and embrace the sweat!

Monday, July 2, 2012

7/2/12- Free Energy- Electric Fever

It's July and hot as all get out. This is a tasty tune to rock out to when you are stripped down to your sweat soaked undies.
ENJOY

Thursday, June 28, 2012

6/28/12- Fang Island- Sisterly

I have had this song on replay for the past 2 days. I am really looking forward to these guys next album, Major. If it is anything like their last then it is going to be amazing.

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

6/26/12- Talk Talk- Talk Talk

If you can wipe away what you see in this video the track is actually pretty awesome. You have some heavy synth 4 on the floor synth drums supported by a tasty slap bass line and swirling keyboards on top- all the makings of a solid 80's tune. On the other hand this video also shares all the makings of a outstanding 80's music video- over the top performances, geometric screen cuts, futuristic sets, and hazy  soft lighting. Combine the two and Talk Talk have accomplished something classic.

Monday, June 25, 2012

6/25/12- The Byrds- You Ain't Going Nowhere

A stellar cover of a Dylan tune by a Byrds group, who was at this point very much lead by Gram Parsons' country music influences.

Friday, June 22, 2012

6/22/12- The Beatles- Birthday

It's a big day for Lawrence, KS- specifically for one of the hallmarks of the city. Historic Liberty Hall is celebrating its 100th year! This amazing building has a seen a lot in its time... including (in a very small way) our wedding last year! Liberty Hall's walls have been home to everything from theatrical productions, films, comedy, political speaches, a wide range of musical acts, and even KU NCAA tourney watch parties. Check out this link to learn more about its history. Thank you to Liberty Hall for being a big part of why Lawrence KS  rocks so hard! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Thursday, June 21, 2012

6/21/12- Royal Thunder- Whispering World

There are some killer metal groups coming from Georgia- Baroness, Mastodon, Sevendust, and now Royal Thunder. Maybe it's the heat and humidity that makes this music so thick and sludgy.

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

6/20/12- Darondo- Lucious Lady

Did a little digging for this one- thank you Spotify for suggesting William Pulliam aka "Darondo". This guy's background is crazy- According to Wikipedia Durando is, "little known by anyone except serious enthusiasts of his genre...The mythology surrounding (him) is that he was a pimp. Darondo recorded three singles and played four shows in the '70s, and then stopped and drove home in his Rolls Royce after he opened for James Brown. Later he traveled the world collecting interesting artifacts, became king of Bay Area cable with three shows per day, and worked as a physical therapist coaxing patients to walk again". Whatever the case, this song is seriously funky. Enjoy.

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

6/19/12- Boyoyo Boys- Tsotsi

Like Paul Simon's Graceland? He surely deserves a lot of credit for that amazing album, but much of it would not be possible without the musicians whose sampled playing makes up most of the instrumentation and for the direct influences from South African music that gave the tunes the feeling they have. One such group of inspiration are the Boyoyo Boys. Take a listen and give thanks because without them there would be no Graceland.

Thursday, June 14, 2012

6/14/12- Pickwick- Hacienda Motel

A bunch of 20 something white guys playing soul music doesn't sound quite right, but that is exactly what Pickwick is. I stumbled upon this young Seattle group trying to find an artist/group that I had not heard of and was pleasantly surprised. In a day where lo-fi rock and electronic infused tunes seem to sift to the top of music trend setters top rated lists, these guys are hitting on something that needs to praised more often- the revitalization of soul, funk, and 50's/60's R&B. I will definitely be following this group's progress.

Monday, June 11, 2012

6/11/12- Misfits- I Turned Into A Martian

Sometimes you only need 1:42 to get your point across. This song is pure adrenaline. Play loud.

Friday, June 8, 2012

6/8/12- Everything Everything- Schoolin'

Im a sucker for intimate sessions with musicians, and this Mahogany Session thing is just that. I can't believe  I didn't come across it sooner. Anyways after spending a little time watching a few sessions by some groups I know and others I don't, I decided to post this group as today's TOTD. Never heard of them before but this English group has a pretty unique approach to their music- equal parts rock, pop, jazz, electronic- a little akin to TV on the Radio. Im diggin. Make sure to check out more sessions here.

Thursday, June 7, 2012

6/7/12- Danny Barnes- Get It While You Can

Barnes is a super talented banjo player that is just as innovative and talented as the better known Bela Fleck. This guy has a load of personality and is definitely worth getting in to- especially his best known project the Bad Livers and his new project Split Livers- a duo between Barnes and Wayne Gottstine who plays mandolin in Split Lip Rayfield (another group to check out). Even if you don't like the banjo or americana music, you have to admire the musicianship. Enjoy.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

6/6/12- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros- I Don't Want To Pray

A tip of the cap to my buddy Garret for turning me on to these guys (or should I say re-turning me on). I had known them before for their popular tune "Home" but wrote them off for not having a lot of depth beyond a good pop alt-rock tune- probably because it was all over radio and television. This is often one of my shortcomings- not digging deeper with certain groups. After this past weekend and hearing this song, I did that digging and yes, this group is super solid. If you are like me and wrote them off, give them another listen...the new album "Here" is pretty fantastic.

6/5/12- The Lumineers- Ho Hey

After a short hiatus from TOTD to celebrate the marriage of two great friends Alex and Rachel, I want to get back in to the fold with this amazing tune that celebrates love- something we need to do more often. A tip of the hat goes to my buddy Pat Mcginn for turning me on to this group. Killer new find...next stop will be another good find from the weekend.

5/31/12- Pearl Jam- Gonna See My Friend

Appropriate track to get ready for my buddy's bachelor party. Gonna see my friend Alex on one of his last nights of bachelorhood. Enjoy this rather solid tune by a rather solid band.

5/29/12- Jeff The Brotherhood- Shredder, Diamond Way, Shredder, Bone Jam

The wife and I went to see Best Coast Sunday night and yes they played a nice tight set and sounded great live, but for me these guys stole the show. They had energy and personality, as well as a huge sound that somehow came out of 3 strings and a drum kit (the 3 string guitar was a big plus for me). Their songs have a really fresh quality but also refer to various groups- Blue Album Weezer, The Ramones, Smashing Pumpkins, Wooden Shjips, Fu Manchu, on and on. I was really surprised to see that they have done a Tiny Desk Concert because NPR doesn't often invite these types of groups in, so it's cool to see them in a more personal way. I think I'd really enjoy hanging out with them, but at the very least I get to enjoy listening to them. Killer new find.

5/26/12- Tracy Chapman- Give Me One Reason

There are some songs out there that you recognize after the first 3 seconds. This is one of them. Solid blues tune.

Friday, May 25, 2012

5/25/12- Bonnie Raitt- Right Down The Line

Even at 62 Mrs. Raitt is still making sweet music. Check out her cover of this classic Gerry Rafferty tune.

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

5/22/12- Santigold- Go (feat. Karen O)

A tip of the cap to my wife for passing this one along to me. Kinda an odd song that has both an atonal and melodic thing happening all in one.

5/19/12- Wheatus- Teenage Dirtbag

Lets all go out and be teenage dirtbags tonight...especially the Iron Maiden part. (by the way, whether cool or not these guys look like they had a lot of fun)

5/17/12- Meat Puppets- Backwater

I am once again feeling the need to get back to the 90's. Today's offering comes from the golden year of 1994- possibly one of the best years for alternative rock, other albums released this year:
Alice In Chains- Jar of Flies, Green Day- Dookie, Cake- Motorcade of Curiosity, Beck- Mellow Gold, Nine Inch Nails- Downward Spiral, Soundgarden- Superunknown, Offspring- Smash, Weezer- Blue Album, 311- Grassroots, Nirvana- Unplugged, Pearl Jam- Vitalogy, Bush- Sixteen Stone, Smashing Pumpkins- Pisces iscariot, R.E.M.- Monster, Stone Temple Pilots- Purple, Toadies- Rubberneck.....Just to name a few!

5/16/12- The Chemical Brothers- The Devil Is In The Beats

I watched Hanna (a great movie definitely worth seeing) for the second time over the weekend and what caught me again was this quirky little tune that plays during a club scene and what the assassin "Issacs" whistles through out the rest of the film. It is immediately catchy but is also very creepy when associated with this killer who wears a jump suit. The music throughout the film is really great and it didn't surprise me when I learned that The Chemical Brothers composed the soundtrack. Give it a listen and I bet you will not be able to get it out of your head...and go rent Hanna!

5/15/12- Donald "Duck" Dunn- R.I.P.

A T.O.T.D. *Special Addition*...I know this is a few days late, but I to be sure I post a farewell to Donald "Duck" Dunn, one of the greatest session bass players to ever live. Dunn has bass credits associated with Wilson Pickett, Issac Hayes, Otis Redding, Rod Stewart, Tom Petty, Bill Withers, Peter Frampton, and Eric Clapton, to name a few. His most visible roll, here, was playing with the Blues Brothers for the film as well as for their records and live performances. From one bass player to another, you will be missed. R.I.P.

5/15/12- Aktar Aktar- Mothershipman

I was back home in the Chicagoland area this past weekend to see family and catch up with friends, and one night we went to visit Jess' friend Aria who lives on the northside in Wrigleyville. After a few beers on the train downtown, a few more during sushi, a few more at a improv show (which was killer), a whiskey back at Aria's, we were then off to hear a local band I had never heard of before- Aktar Aktar. Hearing an unknown band's music for the first time is always an interesting experience, one that I wish I did more and encourage others to do. All too often we go and see bands that we already know and may even know the lyrics to their songs. This is a perfectly fine experience, but it usually comes with certain expectations. Seeing an unknown band though there are zero expectations, all variables are unknowns. With all of this there can be a certain build up of excitement. Some bands deliver the goods and become your new favorite find while others are duds, but those are the chances you take, roll the dice. And roll them we did on Friday. To be honest most of my experiences have been on the dud side, but seeing this band was a breath of fresh air as I was extremely impressed with their brand of psychedelic rock. Give them a listen and try 'em out.

5/10/12- Little Feat- Dixie Chicken

If you'll be my Dixie chicken i'll be your Tenessee lamb
And we can walk together down in Dixieland

5/9/12- Everclear- One Hit Wonder

I have been reinvestigating Everclear's first two albums the past week or so (Sparkle and Fade '95 and So Much for the Afterglow '97). I gotta say, these albums really have stood the test of time. The songs still have a fresh quality full of poppy hooks and layered instruments and vocals. Front man Art Alexakis' lyrics of relationships, the pains of growing up, drug use, and overall insecurities of living life all still relate to the struggles we live with today and do so with the same urgency since they were recorded. This track, "One Hit Wonder" off of "So Much..." exemplifies all of these qualities. If you grew up with these albums like I did (and even if you didn't) I strongly encourage you to give them a listen.

5/7/12- Danzig - Mother

Mother's day is coming up this weekend, make sure to do something nice for yours. This song is classic hard rock, dramatic video to boot!

Thursday, May 3, 2012

5/3/12- Norah Jones- Happy Pill

Here is Norah Jones attempting to reinvigorate and reinvent herself. This is not to say though that her previous albums have not been strong, just rather that they have been easy to pass by. Her new album Little Broken Hearts was produced by Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, Beck, Broken Bells) who seems to have a golden touch because this album is a strong showing for Norah and for the most part succeeds in bringing her back in to the fold. From the album cover to the dark and at times edgy (at least Norah Jones Edgy) songs she has given herself a heaping dose of hip- all without losing what everybody loved in her since her first albums. My only complaint about the album is that at times Danger Mouse's influence is a bit too heavy handed where some songs you could change out Norah's voice for James Mercer's and you would have a Broken Bells song. Give credit I guess to Danger Mouse for having such a distinctive sound. Anyways, Little Broken Hearts is streaming on NPR's First Listen. I suggest you go give it a listen and if you are not familiar with Jones' back catalogue go give that a listen too!

5/2/12- Wood Brothers- Luckiest Man

This brother duo truly write some amazing soulful songs. This is a really nice intimate performance of the lead track of their first album.

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

5/1/12- Trio - Da Da Da

This song/ video is perfect to start a new month. Simplicity is often most appealing in the music world- both in song and video.

Friday, April 27, 2012

4/27/12- Huey Lewis and the News- Jacobs Ladder

The MAN, Mr. Cool himself....Huey Lewis. Along with The News, he put out some of the best pop music of the late 80's/early 90's.

Thursday, April 26, 2012

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

4/25/12- Medeski, Martin & Wood- Whiney Bitches

These guys remind me of my high school days...all of the hours spent getting caught up in a jam. These 3 guys are some of the best musicians out there. If you ever get a chance to see them live, make sure you do

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

4/24/12- Rufus Wainwright- Out of the Game

Jess was using my computer last night so I picked up the iPad which didnt have any music/spotify/pandora etc on it, but did have NPR which includes First Listen. Normally I probably would have skipped over Rufus- not because I dont like his music, but mostly because he is not usually in the realm of my interests. Because of my lack of other options though I jumped in and gave his new album "Out of the Game" a listen. Lets just say I was immediately impressed.
He's is definitely not pushing any boundaries or really inventing anything new, but he's simply just making great music. His voice is as strong as ever as he sings so effortlessly with his unique brand/mix of pop and classical styles. His compositions are varied within style as well as instrumentation to which each song feels unique and individual but not so much that the album feels disjointed. I strongly encourage everyone (if you havent given Rufus Wainwright a listen in some time) to give this album at least one run through and I bet you will go back and give it another and another. I surely have.

Thursday, April 12, 2012

4/12/12- Crystal Castles- Untrust Us

Sorry no sweet video today, but a really solid tune. Immediately it makes me envision kicking ass in Double Dragon or slicing my way through Ninja Gaiden. This 8 bit sound should be irresistible for anyone who grew up in the 90's.

Wednesday, April 11, 2012

4/11-12- Carl Perkins- Matchbox

Taking it back to 1956 with some rockabilly swing. Carl Perkins was one of the best!

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

4/10/12- Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three- NPR Tiny Desk Concert

I know I have said it time and time again, but I love NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series. They truly bring in some of today's top talent- some big names and other lesser known acts. When looking for something new I often turn to it. This was the case for today's TOTD. I came across Pokey LaFarge and was blown away by his brand of traditional American blues, country and Western swing revival. This looking back to music history seems to really be on the rise in contemporary music and I have to say, thank goodness! Come along with me in experiencing this amazing talent in this 3 song set.

4/9/12-Elder Roma Wilson- Better Get Ready

I was listening to a NPR Music story yesterday about the role of soul and gospel music in shaping music history (link here) and during it the host referenced a collection of rare African American Gospel music called "Fire In My Bones" (its on Spotify if you want to give it a listen). Liking what I heard in the story I definitely had to check out the collection and upon doing so I came across this killer tune. I had heard it before though on G. Love's recent album "Fixin' To Die". I like the tuned on his album, but thought it was an original, turns out its a cover of this 1926 foot tapper!

Friday, April 6, 2012

4/6/12- Dan Deacon- Woof Woof

I've been absent a few days but just recently was turned on to this guy. Crazy compositional skills, understanding of electronics, and pushing the boundaries of possibilities in the recording studio. Give his album Bromst a full listen with quality headphones, it is so dense with layers. Also if you like what you hear watch the 4-part Pitchfork "In The Studio" session with him on the recording of Bromst- especially part 2 with the player piano. Simply amazing.

Friday, March 30, 2012

3/30/12- Little Eva- Locomotion

Swing your hips, it's Friday! Go out and celebrate something awesome!

Thursday, March 29, 2012

3/29/12- Earl Scruggs- Earl's Breakdown

A tribute to the man and the legend. Earl Scruggs, the creator of the the 3 finder banjo style and Bluegrass sound passed away peacefully yesterday. Thank you for everything, you will be missed!
1/6/1924 - 3/28/2012

3/26/12- Folk Implosion-Natural One

A friend reminded me of this group and song today. She told me their name and hummed a little part of the song, but I had no idea who she was talking about. As soon as I put the song on though I immediately remembered. I guess this is the beauty of catchy tunes. They have some type of DNA that lingers in you and never goes away. The downside though is that often a group can capture lightning in a bottle for one brief second but fail to reproduce it again. That unfortunately is the story for Folk Implosion.

Friday, March 23, 2012

3/23/12- The Shins- Phantom Limb

Front man James Mercer and his band have a new album out-Port of Morrow- it should be pretty good after four years since their last- Wincing the Night Away. This is my favorite track of that album- strong live performance to boot.

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

3/21/12- Blind Melon- No Rain

Rain for the past 3 days, no end until Friday. Great week for doing all of those things that are perfect for those rainy days. This song/video are simply perfect.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

3/20/12- Aerosmith- Living on the Edge

Now typically I would never post an Aerosmith tune, but this song does have some really strong production value and the feel is so solid. The video is pretty over the top as well- I don't see how any of these shots go together. (*but if you are squeamish watch out because Steven Tyler has done some serious manscaping and is definitely cupping his junk)

Friday, March 16, 2012

3/16/12- The B52's- Love Shack

Oh yeah, 82 degrees. Love Shack time. No need for more words.

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

3/14/12- Anakin- Send/Receive

In my book, these guys have three things really going for them:
1. They are local- based in Eudora KS.
2. Their band name references a Star Wars character- specifically a character that is once good and then turns evil. Awesome.
3. Their sound is a killer mix of Weezer, The Rentals, and Deftones. Thick and melodic.
They are up and coming so if you like what you hear be sure to support them.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

3/13/12- Kishi Bashi- It All Began With A Burst

Of Montreal member, K Ishibashi's side project takes a note from tracks off of Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion. This sparkling upbeat track is perfect for a 80 degree day in KS. I love the bass line that kicks in around 1:09- it's loopy-slide feel sits right in the pocket. I wish this tune would keep going and going. He will be down at SXSW this week, would be cool to check out his live performance.

Friday, March 9, 2012

3/9/12- Elton John- Crocodile Rock

Too good. The man himself tickling the ivories. Heading to St. Louis for the weekend, this song sets the mood.

Thursday, March 8, 2012

3/8/12- Mudvayne- Dig

Some craziness for Thursday. Love the physicality of this song- super rhythmic too. Some weird mix of Pantera and White Zombie. The novelty of the face paint etc. is definitely over the top, but i'll take it for a song that is this thick. Listen to loud.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

3/7/12- George Harrison- Got My Mind Set On You

Some pop rock gold for this wednesday. Give a good listen to the outstanding production of this tune. This video is also probably one of the most bizarre that I have seen in a while. At 1:59 Harrison (not really him) rips out a killer dance....this is a must see.

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

3/6/12- The Roches- Hammond Song

One of my all time favorite tunes. Beautiful harmonies. This is a pretty horrible video, but love the live performances. Be sure to check out the studio version.

Friday, March 2, 2012

3/2/12- tUnE-yArDs- Bizness

There are bands that are very unique but ultimately just dont make that catchy of music, and there are bands that make catchy music but ultimately just are not that unique. tUnE-yArDs are one of those rare groups that are both. I highly encourage you to give them a deep listen. What's even more amazing is their ability to perform their material live.

Thursday, March 1, 2012

3/1/12- Islands- Hallways

Seems I can't get enough of Nick Thorburn's work. This is one of the outstanding tracks from his group Island's new album "A Sleep & A Forgetting". I am really digging the video- this is why traditional forms of art will always trump anything digital. If you like the song, then you definitely need to check out Islands back catalogue.

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

2/29/12- Human Highway- The Sound

Enjoy this special, once in every 4 year, leap day with this solid indy pop tune. A duo between Islands Nick Thorburn and Jim Guthrie (related to Woody).

Tuesday, February 28, 2012

2/28/12- Ozomatli- Como Ves

Some Latin love for this Tuesday. You may need to clear some space to dance to this one.

Monday, February 27, 2012

Friday, February 24, 2012

2/24/12- Van Halen- Jump

It's Friday, cue the synth! Got spunk? check. Got a lot of unnecessary spinning? Check. Got a lot of pointing at the camera with your guitar? Check. This video is amazing.

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

2/21/12- Wooden Shjips- Motorbike

Sink in to the seas of distorted drone-grooves. Good music to get hypnotized by.

2/20/12- Sleigh Bells- Infinity Guitars

Big guitars, big beats, cheerleader like vocals all clipping at highest volume levels. I think I like? The jury is still out for me. Listen to their album "treats" really loud through head phones or in your car stereo- somewhere that the sound can't travel- their songs really have a physicality to them that is intriguing. (I was not a fan of their SNL performance where was the bottom end?)

Friday, February 17, 2012

2/17/12- Hurricanes- You May Not Know

Doo Wop Week (5th addition). You may not know today is Friday. Hurray weekend.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Doo Wop Week!...a tribute to one of my favorite music genres. These songs are classic!

Friday, February 10, 2012

2/10/12- The Exciters- Tell Him

1960's female doo-wop doesn't get much better. great vocal track.

Thursday, February 9, 2012

2/9/12- The Unthanks- Here's The Tender Comin'

Decided to head across the pond for today's track. First heard of the Unthank sisters on NPR (thank you once again). Both have beautiful voices that compliment each other as they take contemporary twists on traditional English folk songs. If you are in the mood for a change give them a listen, they wont disappoint.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

2/7/12- Floating Action- 50 Lashes

Tuesday (for me) always calls for some mellow tunes. I have never heard of this guy before but came across this track by first checkin out Dr. Dog's new album Be The Void (don't listen to Pitchfork about these guys..they are the REAL DEAL), then to Golden Boots (another band I had little experience with) and then to Floating Action. Turns out they're all on (or were on) the Park the Van Records roster. This small label is worth looking in to as they sign some really talented young bands that have affinities with 60's/70's rock and r&b. If this type of music moves you, check out the label's website and do some listening! Anyways, I just really like this tune and hope you do too!

2/6/12- Sonny and the Sunsets- Don't Act Dumb

Good Advice to start the week.

2/4/12- The Ramones- Sheena Is A Punk Rocker

After a bout of the flu I am getting ready to rock again. There is no other band that I can think of to jump start the engine. This song is outstanding.

Thursday, February 2, 2012

2/2/12- The Books- A Cold Freezin' Night

First off, the video for this song is simply amazing. This group has such a unique way of collaging found and created sounds to make something completely their own. Supposedly the lyrics in ">this track were grabbed from those old "talk boy" recorder tapes found in thrift stores. Creepy but very cool. Be sure to check out this to see them perform a song from their album "the lemon of pink".

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

2/1/12- Noah & The Whale- L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N

The first month of 2012 has passed by and life goes on. I really love the simplicity of this song, what a great songwriter Charlie Fink is of this english group. Is it just me or does the chorus share a lot of qualities with the chorus of Tom Petty's In To The Great Wide Open", even how Charlie is singing has that Petty style. I particularly like this approach to his music. Because I am all about NPR's Tiny Desk Concert, be sure to check out Noah & The Whale's go at it here

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

1/31/12- Dr. Dog - NPR Tiny Desk Concert

Last day of January and another 60+ degree day in KS. Enjoy a few tracks by one of the most solid bands in America today. Anyone in the KC metro/Lawrence area should head out to the Granada to hear these boys live Thursday night. I was perusing the Team CoCo website earlier today and found this free stream of Dr. Dogs new album "Be The Void". Give it a listen- its available today only! Also (if you didnt already know about this) this video can be an introduction to NPR's Tiny Desk Concert. Great live recordings by great bands.

1/30/12- Trampled By Turtles- Wait So Long

Are these guys bluegrass or what? Crazy breakneck speed of playing, non traditional playing style (check out the banjo player playing it like a guitar!) These minnesota natives are definitely worth checking out if you love bluegrass.

Saturday, January 28, 2012

1/28/12- Surfer Blood- Swim

Oh man the opening 30 seconds of this song are just gold. Epic and beautiful then direct and forceful. These guys bring back the Weezer Blue Album sound that anyone who grew up in the 90's love. They also nicely sprinkle in some island like sounds and rhythms (Vampire Weekend influence for sure) that push the dynamics and variety in to a place that Weezer didn't. This is a debut album by a young bang, I am looking forward to seeing what they do from here. There are some nice live performances on YouTube that are very much worth a watch.

Friday, January 27, 2012

1/27/12- Taj Mahal- Queen Bee

First of all, I really like this video. It looks like it was originally recorded on a VHS off of the TV. Second, this is a super quality song by a man who reshaped the blues world using world sounds and rhythms. enjoy.

Thursday, January 26, 2012

1/26/12- Beachwood Sparks- By Your Side

A Sub Pop label group that have had an in and out type of career including a variety of side projects also worth checking out. Their albums from early 2000 have a melodic country-rock roots quality to them harking back to Gram Parsons, The Band, The Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield. They have a new album due out this year- be sure to check it out.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

1/25/12- James Hunter- People Gonna Talk and Baby Don't Do It

Two stellar songs for today- all in one great video of one of my favorite musicians today. This fairly under the radar british blues musician is revitalizing the great 1950's and 60's R&B stylings of Ray Charles, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Smokey Robinson to name a few. His recordings have that vintage live quality about them that we love in all of those old recordings. I would highly recommend checking him out! a great place to start is with this NPR concert.

enjoy!

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Hump day.

1/10/12- Ghost- Ritual

Was turned on to these guys by Spin magazine's top 20 metal bands of 2012. Really solid- nice mix of dark lyrics and Blue Oyster Cult-like melody. They look like they would be an interested live act to check out.

12/1/11-Blind Boy Paxton

Start this month with some of that good ole time stuff.

11/30/11- My Morning Jacket- I'm Amazed

I am amazed that tomorrow is December 1st. Realizing that as I get older the years pass quicker.

11/29/11-Thin Lizzy- Whiskey In The Jar

If you call a sword a rapier you are pretty much a bad ass.

11/28/11- Smith Westerns- Weekend

Hey Monday, where did the weekend go?

11/27/11- Beatles-Getting Better

Back in Lawrence after a weekend with 2 parents, 2 older siblings, 2 dogs, and 2 babies...it was enjoyable but nice to be back in the quiet of home.

11/23/11-Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!-The Skin Of My Country Yellow Teeth

Back home after a long drive.

11/22/11- Willie Nelson- On The Road Again

Getting back in the car to head up to Wheaton for Thanksgiving. This trip will top my time in a car to 40 hours in 7 days. The good news is that this trip I will be with my two girls!

11/21/11- Monster Magnet- Spacelord

Mother, Mother. Great tune but this video is a little confusing. The guitar player is playing an electric in the video even though the song part is clearly is an acoustic. Maybe I am being too critical...

11/17/11- White Zombie- More Human Than Human

Man, he says "yeah" a lot in this song. Still it is a classic rocker.

11/16/11- Cracker- Low

Like being stoned.

11/14/11- Starf*cker-Boy Toy

This song is like being on mushrooms riding a rainbow.

11/12/11- Depeche Mode- Just Can't get Enough

Get ready for some killer synth.

11/11/11 (part2)- 311-Count Me In

I also want to celebrate 311 on this three 11's day. A tribute to an amazing band.

11/11/11 (part 1)- Pantera- Cemetery Gates

Today is National Metal Day. This song was one of the first to introduce me to the world of metal. Still a classic.

11/10/11- The Flaming Lips- She Don't Use Jelly

My favorite Lips tune- from the days they were aligning themselves with the 90's alternative scene..boy how they've changed.

11/9/11- Gillian Welch- Elvis Presley Blues

Just can't get enough of her.

11/8/11- Martin Sexton- Diner

A quirky little tune.

11/7/11- Paul Simon- I Am A Rock

Kinda nice.

11/6/11- Mastodon- Black Tongue

Very solid new album by the new kings of metal..but what makes this even better is the collaboration between music and art. Artist A.J Fosik made the sculpture for the cover of this album...check out more of his work, it really is amazing.

11/5/11- Nine Inch Nails-Right Where It Belongs

Always did think this track was beautiful. Not sure why I overlook Reznor's writing chops. Must explore more NIN.

11/4/11- Ratatat-Mirando

Sweet tune and even sweeter Predator based video.

11/3/11- Queen- Good Company

This video gives a cool view in to the instrumentation of this very unique song. enjoy.

11/2/11- Grizzly Bear- Knife

Rainy day here in Cedar Rapids, IA.....good rainy day song.
